The Nature Series is a Free Program Sponsored by TD Bank  Pre-registration is requiredUnder the Sea (ages 6-12)Are you and your family curious about what’s under the sea? Come investigate whales, fish, octopus, seashells and more. Perform several different experiments with your family to discover the wonders of what’s Under the Sea.     Slithery Slime: Creating Polymers to Better Understand Animals! (ages 6-12)Through the art and fun of making your own batch of slime, learn more about a group of animals known as herps! Herps, or reptiles and amphibians, have a lot in common with the polymer of slime. During this class, we'll have some fun with slime while discovering more about toads, snakes, and turtles, what an ectotherm is, how temperature impacts both ectotherms and slime, and how to protect these incredible species!The 5 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Rot - A focus on Sustainability, the importance of Managing Waste, and Understanding How Recycling WorksWe've heard of the 3 R's, but now, let's add two more equally as important R's to the list! During this class, we'll discuss the importance of sustainability and some ins-and-outs of the recycling process in order to make a more significant impact on our ecosystems. Participants will get to learn more about composting, up-cycling, and other creative ways to reduce landfill waste at home. During this class, participants will also be able to take a step on their sustainable-lifestyle journey by creating our own Reusable Bag Holder, perfect for reducing their single-use bag consumption.The Great Pumpkin (ages 6-12) Come and experience the “Great Pumpkin”. Learn about the fruit and the parts of the plants through a pumpkin dissection. Guess the weight of the locally grown pumpkins. Discover how pumpkins can roll and participate in a race. Build a catapult using a pumpkin to launch candy corn.

1:00 PM - 4:30 PM    Cold Process Soap Making for Beginners - Cold Process Soap Making for Beginners
Learn to make your own soap from start to finish. This is a hands-on class for the beginner soap maker, no prior experience is required. The soap making process taught is Cold Process, Thermal Heat/Room Temperature technique.  You will make a log of soap, approximately 30 oz prior to curing.Objectives of class: To gain an understanding of the following: Understanding lye safety.  Learning how to correctly measure raw materials using grams and ounces. What is a soap calculator and why it is used. How fats and oils become soap. What is super fatting? Essential Oils and Fragrant Oils: How they differ? Handout will contain the following information: soap making instructions, lye safety instructions, equipment requirements and reference books and websites resources. General InformationParticipants need to bring the following items; participation is prohibited without the necessary equipment. Full Apron Heavy Rubber Gloves (i.e., Playtex Long Line)  2 old heavy towels to keep your soap warm  Soap Making attire: (1) Closed toes shoes; (2) Long sleeve shirt (high collar); (3) Long pants (these can be old, something that you do not mind getting soiled); (4) Tie back for long hair. After building our most beloved princesses, villians and sidekicks, get ready to rescue princes and princesses from towers, explore enchanted castles, and maybe even fly on a magic carpet or two. LABLAST is low impact, high energy and partner free as it combines fitness with all the ballroom dances that you see onDancing with the Stars such as Jive, Lindy, Tango and Waltz PLUS the Latin Dances of Salsa, Cha Cha and Merengue. After the Cardio portion strengthen your Core with Mat Pilates, followed by Yoga for balance and flexibility. LABLAST is a total body workout that anyone can do! For the beginner and the more advanced artist! Throughout the summer we’ll explore the joys of painting on location at places such as Tyler State Park, Clark Nature Center and More! For painting you can choose to work in oil paints or acrylic. Please bring to the class: Basic set of oil or acrylic paints and brushes, canvas paper or board. A portable easel or drawing board would be helpful for all. These aspects include the use of colorant, fragrance oil, flavor oil, label design and glitter.  Allergy Alert: The products contain nut oils (coconut, shea butter nut). Also, some parts of the crafting process require working with materials that are warm to the touch. Paths to Power (ages 6-12)Explore the discoveries & inventions that have made robots possible. From learning how robots light up to getting them moving with gears. We will experiment with different sources of energy & even get to take a hand-powered generator home. We will see how these energy sources affect the environment & how they compare with sustainable energy while thinking about future energy sources.

Chemical Curiosities (ages 6-12)Become a creative chemist through the investigation of the periodic table and the atoms that make up everything around us! Learn about chemical reactions as you grow crystals. We will experiment oxidizing metals with different chemicals to see how rusty they get, design chromatography bandannas to take home, and even make our very own ice cream! Robots! Paths to Power (ages 6-12)Explore the discoveries & inventions that have made robots possible. From learning how robots light up to getting them moving with gears. We will experiment with different sources of energy & even get to take a hand-powered generator home. We will see how these energy sources affect the environment & how they compare with sustainable energy while thinking about future energy sources.

Hot off the press, this camp is for future illustrators and writers! Campers will develop their own character that will be implemented into a storyboard and then a comic book. Campers will learn the difference between splash pages, speech/thought bubbles, captions, and more. This class is heavy on drawing and coloring. This class is heavy on drawing. If your child loves to draw/create comics, students as young as 7 can be accepted. This is not a figure drawing class. You can take this class more than once and create something new! Each day a different component of the comicbook will be made along with other projects to include: Onomatopoeia Painting – give a word action with this onomatopoeia painting focusing on color, stroke and movement Glass Painting Superhero – select from a few superheroes to make your own reverse glass painting Skyscraper Printmaking – create a metropolis using gelli plates and cut paper Instructor: Leigh Ferello

Explore your inner wild with art inspired by animals! Projects include: Jellyfish Blacklight Velvet Painting - Create an underwater scene using a variety of mediums. Clay Zebra - nearly a foot tall, this zebra requires no baking. Pup-casso - Build and paint a 3d dog head in Cubis style, inspired by Picasso Koi Chigiri-e - Translated torn paper, students will use torn pieces of paper to create a koi pond scene. (F)Oil Pastel - use oil pastels and debossed foil. Animal Print Agamograph - this fun optical illusion/kinetic art shows two different animal prints. Animal Paper Collage - crate art from cut paper, inspired by Maria Pryimachenko Leopard Eye Painting - customized your own safari painting Prerequisite: Students as young as 7 may register for this class if they meet the following criteria: Students should be able to remain seated and not rush through their work.Instructor: Leigh Ferello

Whether you are new to the game, learning to push pawns for the first time, or have played in numerous tournaments and want to sharpen your skills, come to Shining Knights Chess Camp!  Shining Knights has trained numerous state champions and national trophy winners.  They have trained even more kids to enjoy the game so they can spend hours playing with friends and family.  Whether you want to win games in your living room against your parents or win tournaments in other states, come join us and learn how to play chess or play better chess! Each camper will receive a tournament style chess set and a Shining Knights t-shirt.

Students will enjoy a colorful explosion of creativity, inspired by various dyeing techniques and colorful art projects. Positive peer reviews and other projects may be offered, as time permits. Projects include: Glue-Resist Batik - Similar to the effects of hot wax, a safer method of glue is used to create resist patterns on fabric. Shibori Fabric Dyeing - Considered a manual tie-dyeing technique, students will explore how to make patterns on fabric using string. Reverse Dyeing - Turning negative into positive, this technique uses bleach. Tie Dye Coasters - Create tie dye coasters. Marbled Paper Printmaking - Try a fun way to create marbled paper for bookmarks and more. Dip Dyeing - Create ombre gradient strips and turn it into art. Natural Dyeing* - Experiment with everyday food items. Helioprinting - known as Prints du Solei, see how the sun can help create prints, inspired by Henri Matisse. We will be dyeing and transferring onto paper and fabric. This is not a tie-dye camp, but if you wish to bring a cotton shirt (white or light color for shibori and/or dark for reverse dye) you are free to do so! Instructor: Leigh Ferello
